Ancestry.co.uk has recently made a significant addition to its parish and non conformist records collection, with the addition of the England & Wales Non-Conformist and Non-parochial registers, 1597-1970.

This includes the records for baptisms and burials for Holmfirth Wesleyan Chapel 1792-1837. Previously, these were not available online as they were not included in the main West Yorkshire records published by Ancestry in conjunction with West Yorkshire Archives Service.

Unfortunately, however, these new records do suffer from some indexing errors, especially for the burials of young children where the estimated year of birth can be very inaccurate.

So if you use want to use these records using Ancestry's built in search facility, you do need to be careful and look out for results which are outside your expected age range. Also, do check the images of the original records for all possible matches to check for accuracy.

If you want to go straight to the records and browse through the photographic images of the original register, follow these instructions:

1) From the ancestry.co.uk home page, select card catalogue (under "Record Collections"), and search using the keyword "nonconformist"

2) Now select "England & Wales, Non-Conformist and Non-Parochial registers, 1597-1970"

3) Under the heading "Browse this collection" select options:

Huddersfield & District Family History Society publish a booklet with transcriptions of the 1792-1837 baptism records at this Chapel which is invaluable and can be used as a finding aid for these records. However, the Society has not covered the 1814-1837 burial records. To rectify this, I have made my own transcription, which corrects the errors in the Ancestry indexes and includes full details of each entry. A free copy can be downloaded from the top of this page. There are two versions. One lists the burials in the same order as they appear in the original register, so can be used as an index to the images on Ancestry. The other lists the burials by surname, similar to the HDFHS booklets.
